Adaptation in Plant Water Demands

We know that every species on Earth follows the rule of Natural Selection as explained by Charles Darwin in his ’Theory of Evolution’. In other words, every species has to adaptation according to the climate and nature alterations so as to sustain i.e. Survival of the fittest.Similarly, plants can adapt to the extreme climate changes, such as drought and flooding. Scientists of Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and an Australian team from the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) has performed a study on the ablity of the plant’s strength to hold up the extreme climate changes that may occur in future. Researchers have the method for approximating the net plant productivity which in turn helps in calculating the ecosystem water use i.e. plant water use efficiency.

In past, it has been observed that in the driest years, water use efficiency increased whereas in the wet-test years it has decreased. The results of the study suggests that the water-use efficiency of plants is falling and it will eventually diminish if the period of drought is prolonged. The data obtained can be used for analysis that can help predict behavioural attributes of plant, water use efficiency and climate change. This will help the corporate agencies to develop strategies for better plantation.
